THE YENNY STATUE LIVES!

I attended a local Con this Sunday and it was a big surprise for me to see that sculptor Wally Rodriguez finally finished the prototype for the Yenny statue he started like...uh...3 years ago.Believe me it was worth the wait. The statue looks fantastic and incredibly loyal to the character. It'll be available for pre-orders soon!More pictures later.-Dave

The statue will be discussed here:

Yenny... an "alternative" comic!

This may count as a follow up to today's journal or not but either way I find it curious. It's been a while since I've checked the GoComics front page and I just found out that Yenny counts as an 'Alternative' strip! Whatever that means.

And here I was thinking that I was being as mainstream as possible. Not that I'm complaining either but I didn't know I was that "edgy".
Sometimes I feel like I live in the 'Da Vinci code' of comics. Sometimes I get clues of why certain things happen. For example; For 3 years I've been trying to get Yenny into newspapers trough a syndicate. The closer I've got to that is Gocomics, (A Universal Press division) which syndicates Yenny trough the net. This has been an enormous window to show my work to several important places and to catch a nice quantity of readers.
I think that I got the feeling of the strip a year and a half ago. The response of the readers have been good and I'm happy for that. Some online clubs appear, people ask for your stuff and it even gets published by a comic book company.

So you'd think that the strip might be ready for syndication, right?Maybe...Maybe not?

I've sent samples of my work to several syndicates but either I don't get an answer or they send me the usual reject slip that they have on their right desk drawer. Why is it rejected? Yenny's shorts are too short, and no cute animals. Just an annoying lizard who torments the girl and creates Crap Ice Cream, ( Short for CranBerry apple)

Is the strip THAT edgy? I don't think so. After all it does gets published in Puerto Rico in an island wide newspaper. So far nobody complains about this thigs, In fact, some people here thinks the humor is too MILD!Go figure!!

Licensing, Agents and Coffee

"Are you planning to make Yenny an animated TV Show?"
Usually I get that question like at least 3 times per month. Not that I'm complaining about that, but I've learned many things the hard way.The first question you get from a producer company is: "What kind of powers does the main character has" "Does the character walks with a group? " "Is it targeted to kids but marketed to adults?" "Who's your agent?"Those question can drain the creative juices from anyone, but that last question had me thinking... "Do I have an agent?"
....Uhm...no...I had an agent once but at the end it turned out that she had a lot of issues in her mind so we splitted.Once I went to a big company, (no names to protect the innocent), because they were very interested in Changuy.Once they found out that I had no agent, they said that all they could do was to offer me $10,000 for the idea and I had to quit to any creator rights. Of course I said no. Later, a movie from their company came out using the premise I showed for Changuy but...badly written. They stole my idea in a wrong way..*snort*That had me looking for those weird creatures called agents for a few years with no sucess at all. Many of them are busy with their own properties and don't have time to see your idea.A friend of mine once pointed me to this important agency. I send them my stuff and made me wait for like 3 months. After that I got a package from them. And guess what? It was MY own package sealed with a cold note that said: "Sincerely we don't know what to do with this material and we don't have the time. Good Luck".Thing is that most studios won't listen to you unless you are properly and legally represented by an agent. But this incident showed me why the heck are we still seeing the same things on TV and in Movies. Simply because they DON'T HAVE TIME to see new stuff! Or they don't want to.Another company once told me how interested they were in Yenny. We talked for months and even send me some primary paper work! Suddenly they had a change of heart and I got an e-mail that said: 'After some research we believe that Yenny needs more exposure". Good Luck. After a while I learned that they licensed another "cartoon girl" inside their company, but they couldn't go far with it because.... nobody liked her! HAHA!Still I get e-mails everyday saying that I should make dolls and animated shows of my characters. And they are right.... I should...shouldn't I?I still have no agent, no licensing deals and no idea why!The coffee you say?....I'm drinking one now.

Back from San Diego!!

Back from the San Diego Comic Con and what an experience!!! WOW! There were a few highlights and particular experiences from it so let me classify them by topic;

*Note: Yes, I took pictures but I was stupid enough not to bring the digicam memory sticks, so I had to buy several Kodak cams at the hotel's store. ...*sigh*.... I'll post them later.

FROM PUERTO RICO TO SAN DIEGO

Man, what a long trip!! 8 HOURS!! Thank God I was traveling with my wife, otherwise it would've been pretty boring. Those who know me are aware that I don't like planes very much. And this was a pretty shaky flight for my stomach's delight.
The first stop was at Atlanta Georgia. As a Muppet fan, it was a magnificient surprise to find an original Muppet in exhibit at the airport. It was very old, back from the days where Jim Henson used to to ads with them, and this one was from a series of a Campbell soups advertising campaign.
Later we took the flight to San Diego. That's when the plane shook like a naked showgirl in Alaska! The captain said that there was a lot of smog that day and it was hard for the plane to get trough it.
So after a lot of praying and vomiting like a sick dog, we made it to sunny San Diego.

THE CON

I arrived very late on thursday, so I apologize to those who were looking for me that day. I made it to the Con like at 6:00 pm. We were kind of lost so we couldn't find the Alias booth until almost 6:30 pm. I met Mike, Brett, Everett and all da' broddah's from Alias. Cool dudes!
For the next 2 days I signed books at their booth from 12 pm to 2 pm and from 4 to 7 pm. Man! I didn't know so many people read my crap! I mean...come on!! Half naked girls and spanglish jokes? This should be illegal somewhere! It was my first experience in a Con outside Puerto Rico so it was awesome seeing people from all over the world asking questions about Yenny! It was a memorable experience!
I met a few people who has seen me online for almost 8 years! (Including the WB and DC Comics people for whom I've work all this years and never seen before)
Here's the people I met and who also been reading my silly stuff for years:

Frank Cho; whose first words for me was "cul**" y "tita". I of course, was kind enough to tell him the correct way to pronounce that last word. He told my wife; "Do you know what your husband is drawing, for heaven sakes!!??" He has always been a cool guy.

Maurice La Marche; This big guy is responsible for The Brain's voice. (from "Pinky and the Brain animated series") He performed The Brain at our booth saying: "I'll take over the world with Yenny!!" A very kind and talented friend!

Earl Kress; a friend for years. This remarkable man whose also a Looney Tunes comics writers, has also been a writer for shows like 'Animaniacs', 'Pinky and the Brain', 'Tiny Toons', and even work at the Disney classic, the Fox and the Hound!!! Here's his webpage: www.mynameisearlkress.com

Greg Hardin; I've known this talented guy for ages and he's a character designer for the great series Veggietales! After so many years we finally saw our faces! HA! My wife says he's my kid's hero!

Dean Yeagle; He has been an illustrator and animator for Disney and other major companies trough the yeras. His character Mandy is the "positive" version of Yenny, (She's white).

Sean and Jennifer Moore; Talented writers whom I've worked with. They write a lot of children's books including Looney Tunes and Clifford the Big Red Dog.

Jesse Leon Macc; Talented writer responsible of many Cartoon Network series!

Scott Shaw!: The man, the legend! Sorry I missed the panel, Scott, but I heard Sergio Aragones won the showdown! LOL!

I met a lot of comic makers, producers, and people whose name I can't remember now but they were all very kind and great!

Around those who I couldn't met but they send their hello's from their booths were Scott Kurtz, (who btw won the Eisner, Congrats, man!!), Paul Dini, Kyle Carroza, (WHERE WERE YOU, MAN???) and others.

FUNNY MOMENTS

I was surprised to find Lou Ferigno signing authographs at the front door. That particular day, I was in a hurry and couldn't take money out of the ATM, so my whole capital was $ 20. My wife said, "Hey, it's the Hulk" and started to film him with the cam. I noticed that he raised an eyebrow to us and continued signing. When I had a chance I went to him and said, "Hey, Lou! Can we take a picture with you?". But I didn't noticed a lil'sign that said; "Pictures and videos with Lou Ferigno, $20". He of coursed said in a deep voice...reeeaaally really mad.."WOULDN'T YOU RATHER PAY $20 BUCKS FOR IT??" And.....well....it was either that or lunch....so..

......I heard he turned out green and slammed the wall afterwards.

More funny moments happened with dressed up fans who stopped at the booth to 'perform" their characters. Like....klingons....yeah...

Brandon Routh, (The new Superman), appeared without notice and his fans attacked him..... literally.

We also had a breakfast with the DC people on Sunday. We had a great time. I finally met my lovely editor Joan Hilty!

AT THE END...

The last day we visited the San Diego Zoo, which smelled like King Kong's crap. It was a nice experience.....altough...it smelled like "Safari Park and Monoloro" togheter! (Sorry...puertorican joke!)

We went back to Puerto Rico at 10pm and arrived at 2pm. Because of the time zone, night at the plane lsted only 2 and a half hours. I saw the sun coming up at 10,000 feet on the air! I'm still sleepy....

Well, and that's it. I'm definitely going back next year! Hello to those who i met there!! Ke Dios me los Kuide!

Dave, the Red Bull and San Diego iced tea drinking dawg!

I-LIIVE!

For those who are asking; No, I'm not legally dead yet. Been busy as heck and having been able to post a thing. But I will! I promise! I'm working on other new comic characters that I'll be posting soon.
The Yenny storyline is getting more complicated everyday, even for me! I think the characters finally took over the comic strip. Now, every and each one of the residents of Villa Los Kubos has an important role in Yenny's life.
But if you ask me, what will happen next....

Sincerely....

I don't know!!! *snort*

Harvey-Eisner and those awards.

Today I went to the post office and got an envelope with the traditional nomination ballot for the Harvey Awards.
.........................the TENTH nomination ballot that arrives to my mailbox during my comic book artist years.
I looked at it for a while and tought.... Man! It's been ten years already since I've been drawing the Looney Tunes....and I've never won a single thing for it.
I laugh every time I hear someone saying "man, they should do more Looney Tunes". I mean...'Hello'?? What about us? Artists and writers who have kept Bugs' ears alive trough the years in the comics.
Usually cartoon artists are not recognized among comic book artists because....I don't know....Our work is not 'mature' enough? Or demanding enough?

I remember drawing the cover for Looney Tunes # 50 a few years ago. They were celebrating 50 comics! The franchise made it! 5o freakin'comics! (100-something now as we speak). The cover featured the Looney Tunes coming out of their trademark ring and the editor wanted a variant cover for it with a golden ring. That would've been a blast! But....it didn't passed the approval because...It's too expensive and the LT books are not that collectible.

Today I stand before my drawing table. I have yet another Looney Tunes story to finish in my hands and wondering.... Are those who are voting thinking on us?... Maybe not on me but what about Mike De Carlo? A great senior inker whose work goes from Looney Tunes to classic Batman stories?... Bill Matheny? A TREMENDOUS funny writer? Dan Slott? A wonderful funny-writer who understands the Looney Tunes so well? The Duendes-Pablo Zamboni, Omar Aranda, and the others whose work has done so much for the cartoon comics?
What about them? What about us?

Are you watching?

JA-JAAA!!!

CHANGUY

Oooh, Changuy, Changuy.... I've been asked for his return so many times this week that I just felt like posting something.
The truth is that I would love to do so. But comic publishing is rather expensive unless the right financial support appears. So this is sort of an open proposal for those who want to see the return of the Bird in a Mask.

BORICUAS! Aquí, por favor!

Vaya, mi gente;
JA!
